The Australia - Japan Society (ACT) Inc. (AJS) is a non-profit community organisation, formed in 1972 to facilitate contact and understanding between Australians and Japanese and to promote informed interest in Japan, Japanese culture and Japanese people.
The Society enthusiastically cooperates with other organisations interested in promoting the Australia - Japan relationship, including universities, schools and the Federal and ACT governments, and works closely with the Embassy of Japan.

| JAPAN EARTHQUAKE & TSUNAMI |
As the Government and the people of Japan deal with the aftermath of the disastrous category 9 earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region on Friday 11th March, the AJS (ACT) expresses its deep sympathy for those who have suffered loss and those struggling to locate loved ones. We express our earnest hope that the emergency situation with the Fukushima power plant in the region will be safely resolved quickly and our confidence in the strength of spirit and resilience of the Japanese people to deal with the horrific consequences of this disaster. We extend our continuing support to Japan and the Japanese people in what we expect may be a long path to recovery and restoration of these communities.

| The Ambassador of Japan to Australia, His Excellency Shigekazu Sato, accepted a donation of $5,000 presented to him by the Australia-Japan Society of the ACT. The funds will go to the Japanese Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. |
